At college studying opera, Benatar entered a talent competition in 1975 and found herself in the world of rock and roll. She spent four years on the club circuit before signing a deal with Chrysalis in 1979. Helped by Mike Chapman's slick production, great cheekbones and some ground-breaking videos, she was made and sustained by the power of promo videos.
A string of hits throughout the eighties established her as one of America's biggest female acts but little has been heard of her in the nineties.
