Cash grew up in a strict Baptist share-cropping family before getting work in Detroit. Did his national service in the Air Force in Germany where he learnt to play guitar and started writing songs. On his discharge, he married and moved to Memphis where he got a job as a salesman in an electric store and started a course for radio announcers.
In 1955, he signed to Sun Records. Initial recordings sold well but it took until 1958 to hit stardom with the million-selling "I Walk The Line". Later that year he moved to California and work in the movies. He also left Sun and moved to Columbia.
Success brought its own problems, Cash became moody and depressive. He left his family in California and moved to New York where he sank into amphetamine addiction. At the peak of his success, in 1963, he was arrested crossing the Mexican border with a case full of uppers. A car crash followed and then a drug overdose and the inevitable divorce.
His career, and possibly his life, were saved by June Carter (of the famous Carter family), writer of "Ring Of Fire" his biggest hit. With her help, he gave up drink and drugs. The two started working together and, in 1967, they married. He came to the attention of the rock audience when he appeared on Bob Dylan's "Nashville Skyline" album in 1969 although he was well established in the main stream with his own show on ABC-TV (on which Dylan also guested).
