Son of a dance band drummer, Chapin sang in a choir before starting a group in his
teens with brothers Tom and Stephen. Music took a back seat while he pursued a
career in documentary film-making well enough to be nominated for an Oscar. In the
late sixties he once again formed a band, this time without his brothers who had
dodged the draft by leaving America.
He signed to Elektra in 1971 and produced a string of albums, each boasting a hit
single. By 1976, brother Stephen had returned to produce him but the earlier magic
eluded him. He left Elektra in 1980 and seemed set to re-establish his career with a
new hit single, the sequel to his first in 1972. Unfortunately, he died in a car crash
en-route to a benefit concert.
