Rock 'n' roll centre planned

PROPOSALS ARE being drawn up to establish a new visitor attraction in Perth - an archive of rock and pop memorabilia.

The project, which would depend on suitable financing being available, came about after dealer and rock expert Roy Deane decided to dispose of his vast collection.

Amassed over the past 15 years, Roy felt his archive, and the constant need to up date it, had begun to dominate his life.

His Perthshire home is packed with over 5000 hours of video tape, more than 10,000 music papers and magazines, hundreds of books‹not to mention over half a million press cuttings.

This is all on top of the memorabilia Roy deals in at specialist fairs across Europe.

Among the most highly sought after items by collectors, and with the highest price tags, are personal items connected with the stars of the past four decades. Perhaps the most unusual is a pair of trousers which belonged to Jimi Hendrix and may be worth up to £10,000.

On hearing the news that Roy was preparing to break up his archive, an independent consultant came up with the idea of saving the collection.

Scottish Enterprise Tayside were contacted and expressed interest and a town centre building has been identified as a possible home for the collection.

Although at a very early stage, various bodies have shown enthusiasm for the plan.

"I do think it is an interesting possibility," said Roy. "However the logistics would need to be thoroughly worked out."

Roy is to meet officials from SET on October 18 to discuss the project.
