Rare, Limited Edition and Signed Books

Another small, eclectic mix of items I've had in storage for years. All the books here are from my personal collection. Some (like the Genesis Publications) were purchased for curiosity value, others for my own interest in the artist concerned. All have been carefully stored since their acquiral.

Prices quoted include UK first class postage or courier delivery.

The Beatles Derek Taylor - Fifty Years Adrift. Published by Genesis Publications, 1985. Limited to 2,000 numbered, signed copies. Size: 180 mm X 250 mm. 544 pages. Quarto. Original brown half calf and brown cloth with gilt device to boards, gilt edges, red title label with title in gilt letters. Housed in publisher's slip case with paper title label on front. The Beatles Book Monthly described this as "probably the best Beatles-related book ever."

Despite it's relatively high limitation, this is a scarce and highly desirable book. Standard copies have been known to sell for as much as £ 5,000. This example clearly states that it is a review copy and is neither numbered nor signed. As the book sold for such a high price, it's hard to think there were ever more than a handful of review copies. It's rarity value is therefore much greater than that of the signed, numbered ones.

Comes complete with card promotional folder (seen on the right) measuring 220 mm X 320 mm, which includes reservation form, order form, sample page, double sided Origo Special Issue giving details of the edition and a four-page background on Derek Taylor. All in mint condition.

Mick Jagger and Keith Richards have provided forewards and Bill Wyman was project consultant.Introduction by Terry Southern

Published by Genesis Publications, 1990. Limited to 5,000 numbered, signed copies. This copy is neither numbered nor signed, although it has been later signed by Bill Wyman. Size: 180 mm X 250 mm. 368 pages. Quarto. Bound in three-quarter black leather and yellow buckram featuring a 'film strip' pattern, spine lettered in yellow, the yellow cloth boards lettered in black; all edges red. This copy is unboxed.

George Harrison Possibly the rarest of all Genesis Publications books. Size: 80 mm X 42 mm. One of only 32 copies known to have been made. George commissioned Genesis to produce 30 as gifts for him to give during his tour of Japan. Rockmine was lucky enough to obtain two of these incredibly rare items. One was sold many years ago to a well known Beatles dealer. The other, this copy has been held in my collection until now.

The book consists of black front and end papers with 16 cream pages set in a hand bound leather cover. The cover bears the black embossed block type "Konnichiwa" and gold blocked Japanese script. Page 1: "Here Comes The Sun", second verse. Page 3: :"I Want To Tell You", first verse. Page 5: "See Yourself", first verse. Page 7: "The Inner Light", first verse. Page 9: "Something", second verse (illustrated left). Page 11: "My Sweet Lord", first verse. Page 13: "Run Of The Mill", first verse. Page 15: "All Things Must Pass", first verse.

The book is in pristine condition. Any discolouration on the cover as seen in the scan above seems to be a problem with scanning black leather. The cover has no visible marks or stains. Included with this incredible item is a single page of instructions from Brian Roylance, founder of Genesis Publications to Jim Mason of Hunter & Foulis Bookbinders in Edinburgh. Measurements and other addenda have been added in a second hand and ink colour. Most notable of these is "30 for GH".

George Harrison Songs By George Harrison Volume 2. 1992. Genesis Publications. Book Size: 180 mm X 255 mm. Box Size: 200 mm X 283 mm.

Hand-bound in black leather and buckram. 180 gilt edged pages. In black solander box with sliding drawer that holds a four-track CD. The book carries the signature of Keith West, the illustrator but not George's. It also carries no number and does not state it is a review copy. Once again, a highly collectable item outwith the limited edition.

The CD has the following unreleased tracks: Life Itself (demo version); Hottest Gong In Town; Tears Of The World; Hari's On Tour Express (live in Washington D.C., 1974).

Worldwide insured shipping included.

H.R. Giger Extremely Rare "Necronomicon" U.K. First Edition Paperback by Big O Publishing, London (1978). Large size (approx 310mm x 425mm). Near Fine copy with only crease on spine which came from opening out one of the fold-outs in the book. Although Giger is best known for his work on the Alien movies, I bought this because of his stunning cover for Emerson, Lake & Palmer's, "Brain Salad Surgery".

This edition is very hard to find but there is a damaged copy on ABE Books at more than £ 800! No doubt, this is in part down to the misguided belief that the illustration and signature on the front endpapers (seen on the right) are genuine. They're not; and not even Giger's; merely a reproduction of a dedication to him on an original portfolio edition from Salvador Dali.

Led Zeppelin Rare 1969 US Tour Book. LP sized hardcover with 32 page booklet inside, produced by The Visual Thing, Beverly Hills. Images show, top left to right - Front cover; Inner cover without booklet. Bottom left to right - Inner cover with booklet; rear cover.

The book has become detached from the hard cover on this copy, which is not unusual. No attempt has been made to re-unite the two parts. Cover shows some signs of wear. Inner book is very good + condition.

£ 175.

Madonna Rare unopened "Sex" French First (Only) Edition. Published by Vade Retro, Paris (1992). New copy in the publisher's unopened original mylar pictorial envelope. Contains a spiral bound book of 132 pages with aluminium die-cut covers. Features the erotic photography of Steven Meisel. Apart from Madonna, others photographed include actress Isabella Rossellini, rappers Big Daddy Kane and Vanilla Ice (Madonna's boyfriend at the time), model Naomi Campbell and gay porn star Joey Stefano. Includes compact disc containing excerpts from Madonna's album Erotica.

Please Note: I have two opened U.K. copies of "Sex" which will be available in the near future. One with CD in original wallet, the other without CD. They will be considerably cheaper.

£ 250.

Marc Bolan Rare copy of Bolan's poetry book, "The Warlock Of Love" Hardcover. 140mm x 222mm. No dust jacket. Printed board covers. Pages tight with no real signs of wear. Spine carries some damage on the rear upper top centimetre (seen in image on right). On page 1, it states, "Published By Lupus Music". On page 2, it states © Marc Bolan 1969. Then at the bottom of the page, "Printed in Great Britain by Lewis Reprints Limited. The Brown Knight & Truscott Group. London and Tonbridge."

This was purchased in the 1980s at a second hand book store in Scotland. I can find no information about any reprints, other than one in the 1990s for the Tyrannosaurus Rex Appreciation Society. This could be one from 1971 but I have no further information. Copies of the Appreciation Society reprint are selling from £ 190. This has been priced accordingly.

£ 225.
